Life-Work Balance – Ep. 17: Exercise with your pet
Today I talk about exercise as part of my Life-Work Balance series, and a great way to do so is to work out with your pet if you have one. If you don’t, maybe you can ask a friend to borrow their dog or even their cat for a few hours a week. You can have a lot of fun with them and, they will have a lot of fun with you, too!
Dogs are man’s best friends, we know that. They’re always up for something with you and they love the outdoors! Their energy can be contagious, and it can really motivate you to exercise more often. Research has shown that dog owners are more in shape and, even if you’re just taking your dog for a walk, that is part of your daily workout. It’s not only about the actual exercise, but also because you take a break from your work or routine, you get up from your desk, and you completely engage in a different activity. It’s very good for your body to move and for your brain to unplug.
As far as cats, they have a high metabolism and this works even when they nap or lounge during the day. I’m so jealous! However, they still need physical activity to keep their muscles strong and toned, to keep them mentally stimulated, and avoid obesity and arthritis as they get older. There are some challenges about exercising with a cat because they’re not as active as a dog but, you can take them on a leash. Yes, they can be trained when they’re kittens. And, you should start keeping your cat active since the first few months and it will become natural for them to move more often. This is also a great way to create bonding, exactly like with your dog.
