How many times do you get stressed or anxious in a day? Maybe more than once. We can all agree that stress is very – if not too – familiar in our modern society, and sometimes we don’t even pay attention to those situations, they happen so often that they become part of our normal everyday operations.
It’s no wonder that stress has a bad reputation in today’s life. However, stress is not that bad; it’s actually needed in some cases, and it can be a positive thing for us.
Eustress is great to motivate us to move into action, and it can be beneficial and help with problem-solving, motivation, and productivity. Our body can use stress to enhance performance, and to adapt and strengthen our abilities. When we exercise, for instance, that stress in our muscles (also called “hormesis”) prompts them to grow. The key is to give our body time to recover for progressive adaptation, otherwise we’re going to deal with distress, and it can harm us physically, mentally, and emotionally if we don’t address it and manage it.
