We can all agree that food is our fuel, it gives us energy. But it’s a lot more than that: food is information for our genes, it gives biological instructions to our body to promote health. So, shouldn’t we pay closer attention to the food we eat and celebrate our meals?

Unfortunately, eating has become one of those habits where we lose our consciousness and our awareness. You may consume your meals busy and distracted, maybe multitasking while sitting in front of your computer, watching TV, glued to your phone, or driving. That’s mindless eating. And when you just chew and swallow foods in a few seconds without even noticing, you stress your system and, as a result, digestion becomes impaired, and your body is not able to properly process the nutrients you just gave it.

On the other hand, mindful eating is when you pay attention to what you put in your mouth, and you take the time to chew and enjoy the flavors of the ingredients in your meals. By doing so, you shift the nervous system to a more relaxed mode (activating the parasympathetic branch), you facilitate the release of gut hormones and enzymes, and this way of eating also helps signal when you are full. As a result, you improve your digestion, absorb the nutrients better, lower your stress level, and maintain a healthy weight.
