The HPA axis stands for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and it’s a complex system within our body that regulates our stress response. Think of it as a communication network that connects three glands – the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands. These key endocrine glands help regulate cortisol levels and maintain homeostasis, which is balance in our body.
In today’s fast-paced world, the constant demands and pressures can push our stress response into overdrive. Chronic stress from life events can repeatedly cause the HPA axis to be over-activated, and it can make it more sensitive, resulting in higher cortisol exposure.
