Guest on the #WinnieSun Twitter Chat: Succeed in 2023!
I recently had the privilege to chat with the #WinnieSun community on Twitter as a guest. The host, Winnie Sun, is a financial advisor, speaker, and founding partner of Sun Group Wealth Partners, a financial consulting firm. She’s a regular contributor to Forbes, Good Day LA, and Fox News. Winnie has appeared on the biggest business programs and channels in the country, including CNBC, ABC, CBS, Fox Business, hot finance startup Cheddar, and dozens of local network affiliates to help viewers better understand their money.
She started #the WinnieSun chat (happening on Wednesdays at 11 am Pacific / 2 pm Eastern) and grew a fantastic community on Twitter over a few years.
The topic for the chat was “Succeed In 2023 with Smart Systems, Strategies, & Actions for Achieving Your Goals!” I was a panelist with Carla Jenkins (a change and project management expert, and a two-time Amazon best-selling author specialized in personal branding, project management and positive change management) and Christina Wallace (a Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School where she teaches entrepreneurship and marketing).
If you missed the chat, no worries! Below is the recap for you. Lots of great insights and tips about goal setting, perfect for the new year!

A2a. For me, it’s to continue to do more virtual personal finance speaking to help more reach financial independence. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A2a. I’ve got some big goals this year. With my book publishing in the US, the UK, and the Commonwealth I’m working hard to share the ideas I’ve been developing for the last ten years with a global audience. #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A2b. My “why” is core to everything I do: the world doesn’t need more unhappy billionaires. It needs folks building sustainable lives that bring them joy & allow them to make the kind of impact that matters most to them. That’s what The Portfolio Life is all about. #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A2 most of my goals are ongoing though right now I’m wrapping up the audiobook version of my latest book which came out last fall. About to start season 10 of the podcast next month as well. #WinnieSun https://t.co/uo4vweV02R

A2: My 2023 personal goals are to move back to DC. My professional goals are to find a new online store and update/create more products for my audience. #WinnieSun https://t.co/AkzkCX513d

a2) Even if you don’t like resolutions, there’s just something about a new year that screams fresh start, doesn’t it? To me, the why is everything. Keeps you motivated in the hard days. Gives you focus and clarity. Helps decide where your priorities lie.

A2 It’s time to uplevel in both of my businesses (this is my theme for 2023). I’m trying new things, including launching new platforms (more on that soon).
— Suzanne Brown/speaker & author (@mompowerment) January 11, 2023
I’m embracing my why of helping more women move up the ranks to leadership roles. It’s time!#winniesun
A2: What worked in 2022 won’t work in 2023, so we are into implementing new strategies to level up our game this year. #WinnieSun
— Pavel Stepanov (@pavelStepanov77) January 11, 2023
A2a On a personal note, it’s time to uplevel in my life too. I’m working on being healthier so I⬆️energy and make sure that I’m at my best.
— Suzanne Brown/speaker & author (@mompowerment) January 11, 2023
I started working with a nutritionist in late 2022, so that started the journey. I’m ready to make these changes happen.#winniesun
A2b Your why should influence what types of goals you set and how you go about working on them.
— Suzanne Brown/speaker & author (@mompowerment) January 11, 2023
If you’re thinking resolutions aren’t for you, maybe intentions are a better match? I shared more on these on a recent LinkedIn video: https://t.co/MmZ7pzOvnT#winniesun
Q3. Success looks different for everyone. What does success mean to you? If you had to predict, what do you think a successful 2023 would look like for yourself? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/2TUeutjVMT
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A3. Success to me means health, love, kindness. Being about to breathe another day, see my kids grow up, hear and see a happy team and client base, talk to my friends, and just feel at peace. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023

A3a. My vision for 2023 is 100% of my clients achieving their goals and feeling at their best while they become more profitable and successful in life and in their career. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A3 success for me is consistency and chipping away at long term goals rather than looking for immediate success. Also maintaining healthy habits for physical, mental, family, fiscal well being. #WinnieSun https://t.co/Iwzob4CXrF
— John Lim (@bemovingforward) January 11, 2023
A3a. Success in this chapter of my life is hitting my professional goals, sleeping 8 hrs a night, doing bath time with my kiddos more nights than not, and getting quality time with my husband every day. Anything above and beyond that is gravy. #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A3b. This looks VERY DIFFERENT than the definition I would have given you 5 or 10 yrs ago. Before I had a partner and kids my metrics were more distributed across an ambitious slate of projects, travel, and friends. But this season of life needs a pared back portfolio. #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A3: A successful 2023 for me would be getting my #CISSP, helping people get #ITcertified, and returning back to DC. #WinnieSun https://t.co/LgkckttKa5
— Carlarjenkins (@carlarjenkins) January 11, 2023
a3) Defining success is the only way to know if you’ve achieved it. Educators use goals/outcomes to choose material and check for mastery. Any success begins with the end in mind – a truth from Stephen Covey.

Q4. Does how goals are set affect how they are reached? Is it more effective to set very specific or broader goals? How do you tend to break down your goals down & consistently set realistic short-term goals? What are examples of your goals when broken down? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/f2prppjZON
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A4. With reaching goals, you need to know yourself. Are you best with specific goals or not? For me, I do best with patterns. For ex: weekly tweetchat, this many calls/Zooms, livestreams, media, articles, etc. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023

A4a. How you define your goals absolutely impacts how / when / whether you hit them. After I did my MBA I created a “Personal Balanced Scorecard” to help set and track my goals every year. https://t.co/ld4HpAQIme#winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A4 for me it’s breaking goals down to milestones and actionable steps with accountability measures and timelines. I’m a firm believer in going from broad to super specific and then building the steps into your schedule. #WinnieSun https://t.co/DSm2qyNSnd
— John Lim (@bemovingforward) January 11, 2023
A4. I use the SMART criteria to create my goals and to help my clients create theirs: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. This process provides a foolproof structure to the goal setting process. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
I also follow the SMART criteria. It ensures all objectives can be measured and tracked. #WinnieSun
— Pavel Stepanov (@pavelStepanov77) January 11, 2023
A4a. For my book goal, I’m finishing writing a non-fiction book of approx. 60,000 words on #LifeWorkBalance within the next 6 months by dedicating at least 2 hours every weekend, followed by editing in June, and publishing by December. #WinnieSun
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A4b. It was inspired by a lecture my mentor Clay Christensen gave on the last day of class at @HarvardHBS. That talk turned into a presentation for our whole MBA class, which became the book How Will You Measure Your Life?#winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
a4) I think there’s room for both as long as you’re clear about what “complete” looks like. Some goals work well with a schedule – like marathon training. Others need milestones for completion. Keeping track of the progress helps gives motivation to finish.
— 🎓 Amy Hampton, M.A. 🌻🇺🇦🌻🇺🇸🌻 (@lonedaisymedia) January 11, 2023

A4: I have one large goal but I break them down into monthly phases that way I can see if I am making progress. #WinnieSun https://t.co/dYhCprvj0r

A4: I’m doing a Guaranteed Goals Challenge with @JonAcuff! Setting specific goals with room for evolution.

I love his approach.#WinnieSun https://t.co/cHtO3uShPT
A4: Know your priorities and identify the key milestones needed to achieve your goals so you can break them down. #WinnieSun
— Pavel Stepanov (@pavelStepanov77) January 11, 2023
Q5. A goal without a plan is just a wish. What are the best ways to plan for meeting your goals? What metric do you use to gauge your success / track your progress? How do you plan to rectify a mistake or misstep on your path? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/i4Ot6F8hXB
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A5. We have to honor the fact that all of us are busy. It’s easy to get overwhelmed & derailed bc life throws us something unexpected. If you create consistency in your schedule, you’re more able to pivot when the unexpected hits, bc you can resume again quickly. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A5. I use my Personal Balanced Scorecard to set goals at the beginning of the year, check in / revise at the mid-year mark, and do a frank evaluation at the end as to whether I hit them or not. And–crucially–I define the activities that will get me to my goals. #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A5a. It’s important to embrace that mistakes and missteps aren’t always negative. We’re not robots, we’re humans that can learn and adapt due to mistakes too. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A5. Writing down your goals is the first step to success since you can visually see them and the goals feel more tangible. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A5a. State your goals in the positive to avoid negativity or judgment (negative connotations can lead to self-criticism and de-motivation). #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A5b. Challenges are part of life, but what separates those who can vs. those who wish, are those we have the strength to pull themselves up from challenges. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A5b. Make sure your goals are something that YOU want, not someone else. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A5 write them down, break the goal into steps each with time frames, action steps and measurable results, build into your schedule or calendar along with accountability measures such as a mentor or friend to report back to. #WinnieSun https://t.co/kffdqdUQhE
— John Lim (@bemovingforward) January 11, 2023
A5c. Check in periodically to review the progress and see if those goals are still aligned with your values and desires. Life happens and goals are not set in stone; if needed, make the appropriate changes. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
I’m a backwards planner – I start with the goal and then ask myself the questions I need to have answered to make it achievable to develop a plan. You can’t plan for every misstep or mistake, but you can learn to reevaluation and realign. A5 #WinnieSun
— Drea | (She/Her) (@DreaVilleneuve) January 11, 2023
a5) I’m a huge fan of timeblocks. I’m not always able to visualize what success looks like (esp when the world is crazy). But spending dedicated time to make progress on those goals has always been worth it – even if you’re not sure how things will work out in the end. #WinnieSun
— 🎓 Amy Hampton, M.A. 🌻🇺🇦🌻🇺🇸🌻 (@lonedaisymedia) January 11, 2023

Q6. Birds of a feather flock together. How important is having a support system in place? How can having an accountability partner / group of individuals with similar goals help you pursue and achieve your goals? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/lgwvRMwCnh
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A6. Having a support system will always be important. Who your support system is could stay the same, but doesn’t need to. Having diversity in your friend group and network is so much richer and more meaningful and you’ll be better for it. #WinnieSun☀️

— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A6a. Also, when you set goals with others and you hold each other accountable, you have a higher likelihood of completing them. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A6 very important for inspiration, morale boosting, for accountability and for ideation. Doesn’t have to be a big group. Even one person can be a support system. #WinnieSun https://t.co/M0JlUMxkkg
— John Lim (@bemovingforward) January 11, 2023
A6b. Mastermind groups are also a great solution as members share their knowledge, experience, and skills to support and encourage each other to achieve their goals. I host a mastermind twice a year and I love it! https://t.co/5UymFTSKGK #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
a6) Hard things are always easier when you have support and camaraderie. Not everyone has that where they live, so finding support where you can is essential. Tweetchats, like this one, help build those connections for support when you need it.

A6a. My support system is the only way I am staying afloat right now! I have two crucial group texts with friends and colleagues who offer everything from cheerleading to real talk, plus my partner, my in-laws, my team of babysitters. It takes a village! #winniesun
— Christina Wallace (@cmwalla) January 11, 2023
A6b. I think about my team the way a CEO would: I need a personal board of directors. I also think of my husband as my co-founder as much as my romantic partner. And then my broader network steps in with serendipity and luck #winniesun

What are the most effective ways to set yourself and your environment up for success? #WinnieSun pic.twitter.com/YKqPuwj5qg
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A7. Your mindset is probably most important & your environment can be second. It’s important to have an abundant mindset. There are those who default to “let me think about this and find a way” and there are those who default to “no” before thinking these through. #WinnieSun☀️
— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023

— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023

— 🟣 #WinnieSun host of Level Up LIVE ☀️ (@winniesun) January 11, 2023
A8. Everybody needs to practice self-care to function at their best, it’s not a luxury. You cannot expect your body to withstand the excessive demands of modern life and support you all the time. We are not designed and programmed for that. #WinnieSun #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) January 11, 2023
A8a. Personally, time with my family, change of scenery – it could be eating outdoors at a new restaurant, visiting a new park, jumping on a phone call with a friend, or more – it’s just something different and positive really recharges me. #WinnieSun☀️
