I was a guest on the #USABizParty Twitter Chat about self-care
I recently had the privilege to chat with the #USABizParty community on Twitter as a guest. The wonderful host, Anna Scheller, is an author, entrepreneur and radio show producer. She is a third-degree black belt and dedicates herself to teaching others to apply the same mindsets and skills that she has learned on her journey to martial arts Master.
The topic for the chat was “Self-Care” and I had the opportunity to share best practices and tips together with the participants.
If you missed the chat, no worries! Below is the recap for you. Lots of great insights and tips about self-care! And if you’d like to check #USABizParty out on Twitter, join us on Tuesdays at 10 am Pacific / 1 pm Eastern.

Self-care is about taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day: it's about "Putting your oxygene mask 1st"#USABizParty https://t.co/luVgIhsgLo
#SelfCare is key to slowing or reducing the ultimate cost of not taking care of one’s self…that being #burnout, which I have a particular interest in.#USABizParty

— Pavel Stepanov (@pavelStepanov77) February 22, 2022
A2. #SelfCare is recognizing when it's better to take a break than plough through with lackluster results. Can't run on E forever. It's taking a moment to fill back up, BREATHE, be physical or see something visually stimulating that doesn't involve a blue screen.#USABizParty https://t.co/sOmMMvyzoG

Q3. Why is #SelfCare important?#USABizParty pic.twitter.com/nu0C3PQRl7
— #USABizparty (@USABizparty) February 22, 2022
A3 (1/3): #Selfcare is not selfish, a luxury, or a sign of laziness. It’s an essential practice that allows us to listen to our body and mind, let go, and become better and stronger in life and in the workplace. It helps us perform at our best. #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A3 (2/3): It’s also helpful to prevent and manage stress, anxiety, burnout. We may not have control of things happening in our life, but we do have control on how we respond to them by practicing #selfcare techniques and protect ourselves. #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A3 (3/3): I used to think of #selfcare as a frivolous day at the spa with girlfriends and declined invites because I was “too busy.” I learned the hard way how saying no had a negative impact on my productivity, performance, and ultimately health. #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
IN the middle of the day, if I find that I can't think or am getting easily frustrated, that's my cue for a personal break.

I used to feel guilty, but so many people depend on me for their livelihood, don't consider #Selfcare a luxury!#USABizParty

— John Buglino (@john_buglino) February 22, 2022
A3 Self care is routine maintenance for ourselves
— Charlie & Alyx – Charlie Appel Agency (@ColfaxInsurance) February 22, 2022

-Alyx#USABizParty https://t.co/kct7ytkhrA
A3. I can think of so many reasons:
— Anna Scheller, Host of #USABizParty 🇺🇸 (@SchellerAnna) February 22, 2022
👉 We are human beings, not human doings.
👉 Taking care of ourselves means we can be our best
👉 It's not about us, but about those who depend on us!#USABizParty #SelfCare

— #USABizparty (@USABizparty) February 22, 2022
A4 (1/3): #Selfcare doesn’t require an entire day of doing nothing. It can be as simple as slowing down and consciously breathe for 5 minutes, unplug, hydrate, stretch out, listening to music, or call a loved one. It can easily fit in your busy day #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A4 (2/3): Sometimes, #selfcare comes with a “cost” (this can be time, money, or effort), but when you consider it as an investment in your body and your mind, you will be more than happy to “pay the price.” #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A4 (3/3): Make time in your busy schedule to prioritize yourself (like an important meeting) and you’ll get outstanding results in your work, health, relationships, etc. Time is made, not found, and this includes time for yourself (#selfcare) #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A4. I try to take my cuppa tea away from the computer.
— IPA Group (@IPAGroupEn) February 22, 2022
I switch off from work during meals with my family.
I take time every morning to focus before taking any client calls etc.
I block off Fridays from client calls to catch up on paperwork.#USABizParty #selfcare
A4 Sometimes you have to write it into your schedule until it becomes a habit (something I've had to do personally)

Live everything, it takes work.#USABizParty
A4. Hello #USABizParty-ers! #SelfCare for me: putting my phone on silent and I answer it / return calls / texts when my schedule allows. I am a firm believer in not being a "slave" to my phone (or email for that matter). So time I have scheduled for that is what it is. https://t.co/jxVjwmuA3z
— Andrea TheoJohn (@AndreaTheoJohn) February 22, 2022
A4: Have a planned vacation. Work during working hours only, and take short breaks when you need them. #USABizParty

— Pavel Stepanov (@pavelStepanov77) February 22, 2022
A4. Self care doesn’t have to mean a day at the spa. It can be a few minutes of stretches or deep breathing, listening to music, doing a puzzle online. It’s giving yourself time to reset, and we all need that from time to time. #USABizParty
— Dana Lemaster (@DanaLemaster) February 22, 2022
Q6. What are some #SelfCare techniques that you practice or would like to try?
— #USABizparty (@USABizparty) February 22, 2022
#USABizParty pic.twitter.com/xIwIC8ph7y
A6 (1/4): Besides eating, hydrating, sleeping, staying active, and spending time with my loved ones, I love meditation, journaling, pampering myself. Being an introvert, I enjoy solitude, a precious time to reflect, create, and be more grateful #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A6 (2/4): There are many #selfcare practices that you can choose depending on the area you want to focus on: physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, professional. I listed some ideas in this post (https://t.co/GouPIBBurd) and in the graphic below. #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance pic.twitter.com/YECxLsX2dI
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A6 (3/4): A beneficial #selfcare practice is conscious breathing. When we pay attention to our breathing, the brain thinks there’s nothing to worry about and tells our body to relax: we think better, we digest better, we connect better, we live fully #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
A6 (4/4): Self-care is totally subjective, so just do whatever feels best to you to pause and free up mental space! #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
Pause.

Having worked in a public accounting office, including during tax seasons, what I felt then was mental exhaustion, which is not burnout; they are not the same thing, nor is it physical exhaustion. It is so much more.#USABizParty
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
Of the different types of exhaustion, emotional exhaustion (the sense of not caring about your work or others & believing others don’t care) is a much bigger part of burnout.
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
Having personally experience physical & mental exhaustion, battling burnout was toughest.#USABizParty
Hi, Mark! I agree, burnout encompasses way more than that. #USABizParty
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
Hi Sabrina.#Burnout is its own “beast”.
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
I recovered quite quickly from each of physical & mental exhaustion, but battling & recovering from burnout was much longer & more difficult.#USABizParty
I bet, especially because it hits you on different levels and in different areas, and it's hard to "neutralize" it #USABizParty
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
IMO, the toll of physical & mental exhaustion is more incurred by the individual & recovery is quicker, whereas the toll of burnout is born by the individual & just about everyone around them & longer.#USABizParty
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
You make an excellent point. Usually, burnout is more common in the workplace where you have to satisfy many people's needs #USABizParty
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
It’s not limited to the workplace, but often relationships & family members.
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
Burnout can affect everyone who comes into contact with the “victim”.#USABizParty
"where you have to satisfy many peoples' needs." This can be work, church, family, committee, … And when you sacrifice repeatedly and are critiqued for insufficiency… Is it any wonder burn-out eventually evolves? #USABizparty self-care is essential.
— Amy.M.Anderson (@snippetsbyAmy) February 22, 2022
I completely agree, and we're not supposed to live in this way. This is why our bodies end up sending us signals (health issues, fatigue, loss of motivation, etc.) #USABizParty
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
Burnout isn’t just about exhaustion of any kind, but about stopping caring, not just about work, but most of the things & people in your live, sometimes including one’s self. That is when burnout becomes really dangerous…& yet it is not a classified mental illness.#USABizParty
— Mark Carruthers (@MarkC_Avgi) February 22, 2022
That's so right, Mark – You lose interest in everything you do and everything/everyone around you. It's scary, and I see it with different clients of mine. A lot of work helping them come back to the surface #USABizParty
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
Q7. What is your favorite #SelfCare practice and why?#USABizParty pic.twitter.com/4KLMOvBwdC
— #USABizparty (@USABizparty) February 22, 2022
A7 (1/3): I have two. First: Cooking/Baking. Food is our fuel, but also information for our genes, what we eat has a huge impact on energy, mood, productivity. Cooking homemade meals is fun and gives me control of ingredients that I put in my body. #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
Cooking is one of my favorites, too.
— Anna Scheller, Host of #USABizParty 🇺🇸 (@SchellerAnna) February 22, 2022
Cleaning and organizing are relaxing as long as I remember I don't have to do it all at once.
Journaling is one of my favorite #Selfcare activities as well.#USABizParty

A7 Ooo…it's a tie
— Charlie & Alyx – Charlie Appel Agency (@ColfaxInsurance) February 22, 2022
Gardening – it's therapeutic, gets me outside and in the sun (I think I'm part plant), and the end product is FOOD
Writing – I have so many stories in my head, I would go crazy (more than normal🤣) if I didn't write them down
-Alyx#USABizParty https://t.co/LI2BfhO9wQ
A7: watching movies and working on genealogy. Both are excellent diversions from the work-a-day world. Writing is also a great diversion. #USABizParty

— #USABizparty (@USABizparty) February 22, 2022
A8 (1/2): Start from small steps. Ask yourself:
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022
-What is a new activity that I want to try?
-What makes me happiest?
-Who makes me feel inspired?
-What should I do for myself more often?
Focus on an easy activity and set aside 5-10 minutes.#USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
A8 (2/2): if you need help coming up with activities that you find restorative, enjoyable, and energizing, and commit to them, try Positive Psychology’s #SelfCare Promise: https://t.co/yXqOoOMryP #USABizParty #LifeWorkBalance
— Sabrina Cadini (@SabrinaCadini) February 22, 2022

A8. Sometimes #SelfCare is getting that doctor's appt done or other not-so-fun stuff you NEED to do but don't necessarily want to do with your free time. I'm going to work on prioritizing the needed-but-not-fun care. I do a great job at the relaxing, fun side! LOL #USABizParty https://t.co/NMN0QY8nDq
